After a false start in the ‘50s when the ‘Road Rover’ project was shelved, in the 1960s Land Rover returned to the development of an SUV focussed more on the leisure user. First labelled, when under development, the “Land Rover 100 inch Station Wagon”, this project manifested itself on its launch in 1970 as the World renowned “Range Rover”. In its various guises the Range Rover has remained the definitive quality SUV and therefore represents Land Rover’s second World class iconic brand.
Whilst exhibiting the Range Rover is not a core objective of our collection, its story is every bit as remarkable as that of the Land Rover / Defender. In the course of our work we have inevitably come across occasional opportunities to acquire classic examples of Range Rover or limited editions which have caught our eye (such as the remarkable “CSK” pictured above – named after the initials of the engineer who led the original Range Rover development team). Forgive us this distraction, that we justify (rather lamely) on the basis that the Range Rover mark owes its gestation to the same DNA that laid in the heart of the Land Rover engineering team during its formative years.
