Series I 80" - a few years on
Series I: 80" Canvas Top (1953)
This wonderfully presented Series I Land Rover has featured in numerous Classic Land Rover magazines and was entered into the Strata to Florida tour in 2016. The Series I was professionally restored in 2015 which included a rebuild of the engine, gearbox and a refinish to the paintwork.
This is one of the later 80" wheelbase Land Rovers manufactured shortly before the first major revision to the model when design grew by 6". Even from the earliest times the Land Rover design was never fixed in stone. Changes were slipped into the line in an evolutionary manner. Interesting comparisons can therefore be made between 'UYO' and our earlier 1949 Series I. The headlights have escaped from behind the front grill, the semaphore indicators have gone (but you will still struggle to find indicator lights) and, yes, exterior door handles have by now arrived. Perhaps most significant for the driver of the day was the newly inroduce 2ltr petrol engine which offered a far more purposeful output than the original Series I's.
This is a charming vehicle and a great pleasure to be seen out in. It also pulls its weight, being one of the more common of our vehicles hired under our Classic loan scheme.
