Flying the flag for Britain
NINETY: Station Wagon - RoW (1994)
FLYING THE FLAG for BRITAIN
In 1994 this Land Rover NINETY County 2.5 litre tdi Station Wagon left the factory in 'Rest of World' configuration destined for the British Council office in Nairobi. In essence this meant that the engine was slightly detuned and catalytic converters omitted from the exhaust to provide the vehicle with more resilience to uncertain and, probably, lower grade fuels abroad. It was specified in white, the colour chosen reflecting both the climate in which it was to live and its diplomatic role.
Some four year later the Defender was transferred to the British Council’s offices in Islamabad where it was plated GLTA-5240. Shortly thereafter it was reassigned for use by the First Secretary of the British High Commission in the same city. That gentleman clearly was warranted a higher level of comfort as it was arranged at this time for 33,500 rupees to be spent with Sigma Motors, Land Rover’s agents in Islamabad, on the retro-installation of air-conditioning.
This vehicle returned to the UK in January 2003 and plated L135 HYN whereupon it arrived to work out its days at a fishery in Mid-Wales. It’s final adaption was thus the installation of a highly rated wiring loom, battery pack and inverters required to support specialist containers enabling the delivery of high value specimen fish to clients throughout the country. The air-con was removed to facilitate this adaption.
The vehicle will shortly be displayed in our collection plated and furnished as it would have been seen on the streets of Islamabad.
