A military makeover

One-Ten: Military - Tinthonus LEP (1988)

This moderately regular Military One-Ten was one of a batch of 332 hard tops that left the factory in 1988 Fitted For Radio ('FFR'). It is held by us as it was part of the 2007 Tithonus project. The MOD chose this as the project name to define the LEP (Life-Extension-Programme) whereby over 2,500 LWB Defenders could have their lives extended by up to 10 years. (Greek scholars amongst you will understand the analogy with the Greek God of the same name.)

The goddess Eos asked Zeus to grant Tithonus immortality. But the plan was not a great one. Unforeseen consequences and all that. It was not lost on Zeus that when the request was made, no mention was made of 'eternal youth'. So Tithonus had a pretty bad time of eternity in view of his continued aging. Naturally, it is our hope that this exhibit will not only be preserved for posterity, but we will do our utmost to negate the ravages of the passing years so it will avoid the fate of the original Tithonus.

A new hard top (as first seen on the Wolf) was typically fitted along with driver safety equipment - upgraded seat belts (including rear seats) and an internally fitted roll cage. The chassis and bulkhead were refurbished on a needs-be basis and the running gear (brakes, bearings, seals and shocks) where replaced. All wrapped up with a new paint job of Nato Green. Although the plan was to lengthen the service life by up to 10 years, this particular Tithonus appears to have been only lightly used post refurbishment as the components introduced barely show the wear and tear of army life.

Military Vehicles were typically well maintained and only the better condition vehicles were selected for this overhaul. Our Tithonus is therefore, like so many of its type, is in a condition that belies its age, particularly when compared with its contemporaries who have not benefited from this new lease of life. So to keep it 'real', in addition to its place our display, this vehicle also takes an occasional turn as a work horse and tow vehicle to the collection.
