SAS Long Range Patrol Vehicle

Defender 110 Hi-Cap: Tdi SAS prepared (1992)

Built in 1992, 78 KK 58 is a comparatively late version of the SAS prepared Defender based upon a cut-down Hi-Cap (High Capacity) body and chassis. This was the last of a batch of 10 similar vehicle delivered to the SAS's base at Hereford. It sported the 2.5 Ltr TDi engine and provision for a mounted a GPMG and a rear facing 50 calibre machine gun. This vehicle served around the World on SAS operations in three continents. However many of those exploits are yet to reach the public domain and we are afraid the regiment at Hereford remain pretty tight lipped. More than that can't be shared!

There was obviously much in the way of special kit. Its 'get you home' equipment includes a meaty winch mounted in the front bumper, switchable twin fuel tanks, sand ladders, together with the obligatory hand tools mounted on the front wings. We had thought (like our Pink Panthers) those cylinders on the front and rear bumpers were to launch smoke grenades. However, when we started to poke around having first gained stewardship of this formidable vehicle, imagine the smile on our face when we found none other than a couple of unopened cans of lager in two of the launchers. So perhaps that's how they kept sustained behind the lines - or could this have been possibly a special weapon?
