The Ultimate 'Country' Statement

Range Rover P38: 4.6 Ltr V8 Auto (2000)

The 'Holland & Holland' and its sibling the 'Lindley' jointly represented the ultimate Range Rovers at the turn of the new millennia. Land Rover Special Vehicles developed these based upon the 2000 model year. They sought to create the ultimate city and country Range Rovers respectively. The mechanics were based on the regular model, the cars' exclusivity coming in their finishes.

In relation to the Holland & Holland, Land Rover worked on the spec' alongside leading London gunmaker of the same name. Only 400 were made, of which just 100 were for UK customers The remainder were destined for the US. All came in a special quality paint finish, Tintern Green. Inside there were a host of design enhancements. Upholstery was in dark Saddle Leather with chocolate piping. Those colours were then reflected in the two-tone steering wheel. The wood finish (including seat mounted tables for rear passengers) were of oiled gun-wood. Other more discrete design 'touches' were plentiful and connected the car to its collaborator's brand.

Reportedly the final paint finish and trim enhancements required 30 hours of work in Special Vehicles' finishing shop.

Our vehicle is particularly noteworthy in that it retains all the Holland & Holland design references including the special collapsable picnic table incorporated into the rear load bed which has been lost to many equivalent cars. It also left the factory with the entertainment pack which incorporated rear mounted headrest screens, a TV receiver and VCR player. This places it amongst the elite of the elite - being just one of 20 such vehicles released by Land Rover with this enhanced specification.

Cars are owned to be used. This is no exception. So some years ago its discerning owner used a London specialist to upgrade the entertainment equipment to state of the art equivalents reflecting the prevailing technology. Happily the original equipment is retained with the car ensuring its full provenance is maintained.

The vehicle was also genuinely used 'in the rough' so enhanced suspension has been fitted featuring Arnott Mk 3 airbags that are capable of lifting the car a full 20mm higher than the original specification. Underside protection has been applied and finally (for no reason other than showmanship) a steel sports exhaust system was fitted in more recent years. Not original we admit, but the V8 sounds wonderful as a result.

Exclusivity comes at a price. The list price (including the entertainment pack) in 2000 was an eye-watering £68,495. But if you are seen around and about on the best shoots and want to stand out of the crowd ... whose counting!
