St John Ambulance from overseas
Defender 130: Ambulance (2000)
This vehicle was worked hard during its life on the small Crown Dependency just off the North French coast. It played an active part in Guersney's St John ambulance fleet which served as the first-responder attending to the Island's health care needs. Being a unique component of the fleet of more conventional ambulances, 33329 was naturally the first choice to deploy on station or attend incidents along Guersney's rugged coastline. It also stood by during the many outdoor and sporting events held on the island. In particular 33329 was in regular attendance during Guernsey's busy motor sport calendar.
More InfoThe history file held on this vehicle includes the tender specification accepted by St John. This vehicle was manufactured on a regular 130" Land Rover Chassis by MMB International (Macclesfield Motor Bodies (UK) Ltd). As their name suggests they were (and continue to be) specialist manufacturers of bespoke ambulances. The price quoted for this version fully fitted out with necessary electrics. livery and medical fittings was £73,279 ex works.
We were quick to introduce ourselves on learning of 33329's imminent retirement from service. It has since passed to us in a fully fitted state with its medical equipment and a token supply of medical related consumables. On the day of collection we were initially shocked (and then pleased) to find that the ambulance came with its own patient, in the form of a 'Resucitation Annie' teaching aid lying under a blanket on the stretcher.
Its first outing, once held within our collection, was as a guest appearance at a local nursery where the youngsters had a wonderful time clambering throughout the vehicle learning first hand how such an important vehicle gives aid to those in urgent need, But more enjoyable for them was helping us check that all blue lights and sirens still worked ... which happily they did!
