For those going up in the World
Series III: 109" (1973)
One typically associates Cherry Pickers with utility companies, However this 1973 Series III 109" was purchased for high level maintenance tasks undertaken by the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was worked for an unbroken 10 years before being retired from service and sold on to hire contractors LV Mays in Merton, South London. The May's eventually re-purposed the vehicle, transferring it to the equestrian centre located at their home. Here it regularly was brought into action helping with tree and hedgerow management, building maintenance and the like. It worked in this role until 2017. We are told that its reliability was never in doubt providing one allowed a few minutes to re-inflate a reticent tyre before use. Upon the death of the 94 year old Mrs May, the vehicle passed to a trusted employee who showed the vehicle personally on an occasional basis before enabling it to enter into our collection in 2019, providing for its ongoing care.
The exhibit is presented in the condition that it arrived to us. The lumps and bumps in its bodywork pay testimony to the tough conditions of work in a contracting plant hire environment. So it is not for us to sanitise the picture that is shown by this hard-worked exhibit. Needless to say the working parts of the Land Rover vehicle are not undaunted by the superficial scars of the workplace.
Naturally we keep the woking parts in good operating order, Not only to maintain the integrity of our exhibit, but also to allow us to change a light bulb or two!
