LRHC is strictly non-political in all it does. However, the same cannot be said of it’s latest joiner. This 1977 military Land Rover is no stranger to politics. In September 2019, it acted as a platform for speakers at a demonstration held in Parliament Square in support of ‘Soldier F’, the long retired Para’ under threat of a fourth legal prosecution for actions occurring in Northern Ireland on ‘Bloody Sunday’.
This well sorted, specially prepared, cut-down Series III 109″ was commissioned by the Globetrotters (30 Signals Regiment) for use in their tactical role, providing communication support for campaigns involving rapid deployment and forward action. This Special Operations Vehicle (SOV) is heavily spec’d accordingly. After this highly active role there followed a spell at the Royal School of Signals in Boscombe Down. It then left service in 1993 and eventually found itself in the hands of a retired member of the Royal Signals. That led, in turn, to its politically charged trip to the Capital in 2019.
This is clearly a vehicle with attitude and joins a number of other examples of similar SOV’s held in our collection. But it fills a gap in the chronology as we had hitherto held examples of their kind from every decade save the 70’s. We can now be satisfied that we have every decade covered from their inception in the 60’s to the end of the Millennium.
Now in our hands, we can guarantee a less controversial life in retirement for this particular veteran. More can be read about the vehicle by following the Collection link above.
