Hats off to a friend of the Collection, Guernseyman, Nigel Dorey, who fills his spare time model making. Having travelled to the West Country to visit us at LRHC he took on the challenge of capturing the aesthetic and spirit of our very own Pink Panther, in miniature!
He started off with a regular Tamiya 1:35 scale model kit. But then, armed with photos taken of the ‘real McCoy’ (our vehicle MIL002), he went on to accessorise his model to create a faithful representation of this perhaps the best known of Military LR’s. In addition to the full compliment of ‘fire power’ you will find exacting details ranging from; the triple sets of grenade launchers fore and aft, the regular suite of pioneer tools, cam’ netting, bergans slung alongside, amo’ boxes, fuel cans, radio sets and much more. Younger visitors note the regular sun compass mounted on the centre of the dash. There was no GPS for troupers in the 60’s!
Not satisfied with recreating the vehicle itself, Nigel went on to set his Pinkie in a scene reminiscent of its 60’s desert combat role which gave rise to its iconic ‘pink’ camouflage. The thoughtful detail in the model is remarkable, even down to the skid marks in the sand and oil seeping from the oil barrels stacked behind for refuelling.
It is a real pleasure to share our enthusiasm for ‘The Land Rover Story’ in all its facets. Even more so when our interest passes to those beyond the ‘petrol head’ fraternity.
Thanks for sharing the pics, Nigel. This is a truly great homage worthy of a much loved Land Rover. We know you enjoyed the task of perfecting this model as much as we enjoy preserving and showing this remarkable vehicle.
Amazingly, Nigel has kindly offered to present the model to the Collection. So as soon as we have fabricated a suitable display case, visitors will be able to enjoy appreciating the skill of the model maker while soaking in the aura of this tremendous vehicle which has literally fought for its place in UK military and automotive folklore. Nigel, we and future visitors are indebted to you. Top Man!
